Art.Work Professional Development Workshops For Artists

Art.Work has come into being following the closure of Artists Alliance in 2018. The Bootcamp workshop programme run by Artists Alliance provided practical and necessary professional development opportunities for visual artists. These workshops were a valued aspect of the Artists Alliance offering.

Art.Work has been established to continue making these opportunities available to artists and the wider creative community.  Many of the same features will be present; small groups to encourage genuine interaction and connection, high quality presenters, excellent resources and friendly interaction. There will be some new elements too: extended workshops for more in-depth discussion, and some practical art making workshops which enhance the themes. 

The 2019 winter programme has just been announced, consisting of six complementary workshops, which will run over four Saturdays from May – August 2019 in central Auckland.

DAY ONE, Saturday May 18, 2019

Clearing a path; tactics for writing in and about art practices, with Elle Loui August

Elle will take the group through some writing examples and exercises. She will focus on both writing about your own work and writing about others and give practical examples on how to extend your writing about art.

Elle Loui August is a writer and curator currently based in Tamaki Makaurau. Elle has previously held curatorial roles at The Physics Room in Christchurch, and Objectspace, Auckland and research and teaching assistant positions in Writing Studies at the University of Auckland, and Elam School of Fine Arts where she completed her MFA in curatorial practice through the postgraduate research programme. She has written for a number of institutions and publications including Art New Zealand, Artspace NZ, Pantograph Punch and split/fountain, and presently divides her time between independent writing and curatorial projects.

DAY TWO, Saturday June 22, 2019

10am - 12pm: Loosen up, draw from life with Sam Mitchell

This drawing from life workshop will start off with a series of fast paced quick changing poses, teaching the drawer how to work fast and capture basic information. These poses will then lengthen to produce a final longer, finished work.

By looking at the model quickly and constantly moving you see shape, light, dark, and form differently, the body as a whole is then captured to show the movement, the frantic pace means you capture only the essentials with a lack of detail.

Detail comes in the longer poses, the idea is to get the drawer to look at the body as a whole in the quick drawings and then the final work can be more concentrated and detailed.

12:30pm - 2:30pm: Break your Creative Rut!

Do you need some practical ideas and tools to approach creative block? Are you getting stuck in the same routines and wanting to move your practice forward? This workshop will build on the loosening up of the morning's drawing session, shifting the focus to your practice and shaking things up! Speaker to be confirmed shortly.

10am - 12am: Tax Workshop for Artists with Robert Westall of Naked Accounting

Robert Westall is a founder and director of Naked Accounting. From working with a variety of creative businesses and individuals he understands the unique challenges that come from making a living from your creative talent. Robert will lead a practical and down to earth discussion about tax, expenses and making the most of your art practice.

12:30 - 2:30pm: Get the Admin Under Control with Maggie Gresson and Amberleigh Carson

Get more time in the studio by getting your admin under control. This workshop will provide some tricks and techniques to keep on top of the boring stuff that often gets neglected. You will come away from this session with some useful templates and resources to save you time, so you can spend it focusing on your practice. Maggie Gresson and Amberleigh Carson both formerly of Artists Alliance will draw on their experience working with and for artists to bring you this workshop.

Critique Session with Yolunda Hickman

This session will provide an opportunity to have your own work critiqued and to learn how to critique the work of your peers in a useful and valuable way. The session will allow time for each participant to take part and will be guided by artist Yolunda Hickman.

Yolunda Hickman is an artist working in the wider fields of painting, aiming to test the potential of image and meaning. In 2016, she travelled to Canada for a residency at Banff Centre for the Arts and was also part of the 2019 RM Summer Residency, Auckland. Selected exhibitions include Legend and Letters (Window onsite and online, 2015), Passed, repeating last (Five Walls, Melbourne, 2016) and Size (Te Tuhi, 2014). Hickman completed her Master of Fine Arts at Elam in 2013 and is a current Doctoral candidate there with a focus on the visual semiotics and limitations of communication systems.
